“Star of the Week” Spotlight: Mike Adams

Each week at Brooks Bell, we have a short meeting Friday morning with the entire team. During the meeting we get updates on tests and the company, and award a “Star of the Week.”

This week, our Star is Director, Optimization Engineer, Mike Adams! As an essential part of our team, Mike works day and night to make sure projects are finished on time and leads our awesome team of developers. Congrats Mike!

What is a problem or challenge you faced and overcame in the past weeks? (This can be a test issue, a tool issue, anything really)
I think that being part of the engineering team we tackle many challenges each time we start coding tests. Pages you test on are usually not coded with testing in mind, this provides many difficult challenges to overcome when writing our code. I can’t point to anything specific but, I can say that without the skill set and hard work of our entire engineering team we could not overcome a lot of challenges other testing teams get ‘road blocked’ on.

Are you reading anything interesting right now?
Right now I’m reading JavaScript and jQuery Interactive Front-End Web Development by Jon Duckett. This is a great book for anyone that is looking to get started programming JavaScript & jQuery. It runs through all of the basic techniques in a brilliantly visualized way. It will help you understand how code actually works in its most basic sense. As someone who uses these programming languages everyday it isn’t about learning how to code with them; it’s about re-learning the essential basics of the programming language. It helps to re-establish a solid base for something that you use every day. I’d highly recommend this book for beginners as well as advanced programmers.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out with testing?
Yes, start small. When you first start out testing you have probably invested a ton of money into your testing tool and implementation; you are ready to start getting some big wins and big wins quick. My suggestion is to not dive head first into the more difficult areas of your website and tone down the complexities of your first couple of tests. The reason for this is because you are going to run into tech hurdles on your first couple of tests. You want to make sure you get all of the kinks out before you ramp up to your full capacity. You want to build a solid foundation for testing before you get too far into your program.

The Brooks Bell Star of the Week is a team member who has gone above and beyond typical expectations during the week. The award is designed to empower our team and ensure everyone’s hard work is appreciated and recognized.

The winner receives a large trophy they get to keep for the entire week, fully equipped with extra Nerf darts (extra protection for those impromptu Nerf wars). They also get the honor of selecting the following week’s winner.
